Vitamin D and CalciumVitamin D and Calcium

We have probably heard a thousand times that calcium builds strong bones. If you’re like me, your mother probably told you to drink your milk. The reason; because you need it to build strong bones. Whether you believe it or not, that was, more than likely, the ulterior motive behind getting you to drink your milk.

I always drank my milk, and continue to do so, no matter what the motive because I know how important vitamins and minerals are to staying healthy. That’s why, even to this day, I take daily vitamin supplements to make sure I get the necessary vitamins and minerals that will keep me on a healthier course as I continue to age. Included in those supplements are, of course, vitamin d and calcium, two bone building and strengthening nutrients.

As a mater of fact, a recent study says that “taking both calcium and vitamin D supplements on a daily basis reduces the risk of bone fractures, regardless of whether a person is young or old, male or female, or has had fractures in the past, a large study of nearly 70,000 patients from throughout the United States and Europe has found.”[1]

Aging has a way of affecting the bones in our body, which leads to what is called bone density loss. Bones, a “living tissue like other tissues and organs”[2], are subject to calcium depletion during the aging process. The depletion of calcium leads to lower bone mass, which in turn, leads to increased susceptibility of fractures.

“Normal calcium intake and exposure to Vitamin D often create healthy bone tissue until people peak at age 30. Then, people begin to lose bone density; by age 50, it can become problematic. Osteoporosis – a term used to describe the loss of normal bone matrix – is common and is estimated to afflict approximately 40 million Americans.”[2]

Many people think that vitamin d and calcium are only needed for aging women. However, according to the study, the “combination of supplements (vitamin d and calcium) benefits both women and men of all ages, which is not something we (the scientists) fully expected to find.”[1]

As you can see, aging is the great equalizer. Aging does not happen to women only; it happens to both men and women! Loss of bone mass, due to the aging process does not happen to women only; it happens to men also. Even though a greater percentage of women are affected by the loss of bone density, men and women alike need to monitor their bone density. In so doing, it’s also smart to adhere to a daily supplement of vitamin d and calcium.

Everyone of us is getting older, and everyone’s body ages differently. However, as the study revealed, there is a “growing consensus that combined calcium and vitamin D is more effective than vitamin D alone in reducing a variety of fractures.”[1]

TriVita® provides a great vitamin d and calcium supplement. Their vitamin D provides, five forms of chelated calcium, over 20 bone-fortifying vitamins and minerals, 100% RDI of Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Vitamin D, and Chlorophyll-coated tablets that protect valuable nutrients, time-releasing optimal absorption.

Vitamin D DeficiencyVitamin D Deficiency

I’ve been writing articles regarding Vitamin D and how important it is to your body. As a matter of fact, and according to many health professionals, it helps “promote bone health and ward off diseases like osteoporosis.” However, many people suffer from vitamin D deficiency.

The statistics are unbelievable when it comes to vitamin D deficiency. According to experts, nearly 80 percent of Americans are deficient in vitamin D. WOW!! Why all the concern? Because this leads to an increased risk for inflammation, heart problems, weak bones, osteoporosis, unhealthy blood pressure levels, decreased immunity and memory loss; not to mention a major strain on our health care system.

As with most of my articles, I try to keep you informed of health risks, and I try to pass along information when I receive it. Today is no exception! Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer for TriVita®, in his Weekly Wellness Report, explains how to test yourself for vitamin d deficiency, explains the signs of deficiency, reasons for deficiency, and what you can do about it.

I’ve included the complete article below. Please read this article and make sure you do o become one of the deficiency statistics. There is help, and you can do something about it.

Test Yourself for “D”eficiency by Brazos Minshew

With your thumb, press on your sternum (breastbone). Is it tender or painful? Now, press on the tibia (shin bone) of both your legs. Is it sore or tender? If the answer is “yes” to both of these tests then you have a 93% chance of being Vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D may be the most prevalent vitamin deficiency in our culture. What is Vitamin D and what does it do for us?

Function of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is both a vitamin (vital amine) and a hormone. It acts as a vitamin when it binds with calcium for proper absorption. Humans cannot digest calcium without adequate amounts of Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is a hormone (a messenger inside your body) because it directs cells, organs, muscle and bone in daily activity. It is a hormone because your body creates it in response to sunlight on your skin. It participates in weight loss, the function of your immune system, blood sugar regulation and basic human metabolism.

Humans mobilize essential fatty acids, such as Omega-3, with Vitamin D. In order to properly use calcium and Omega-3 you simply must have enough Vitamin D. Yet, many people don’t.

Signs of deficiency

The test above is one way of checking for low levels of Vitamin D. You see, calcium and other minerals are delivered to an area in your bones that is like a gelatin matrix. This gelatin matrix hardens into sturdy bone. Calcium can only arrive in this matrix if it is escorted by Vitamin D. If you are deficient in Vitamin D, this matrix will revert back to gelatin near the surface of the bone. Tenderness and bone pain will result.

This kind of bone pain can be seen in cases of osteomalacia (softening of the bones), as well as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and even the pain associated with chronic depression.

Further, Vitamin D deficiency can result in:

  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
  • Psoriasis

Eventually, Vitamin D deficiency may lead to cancer (especially breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer), osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease.

Reasons for deficiency

The primary reasons people become deficient in Vitamin D are cultural. For instance, women that wear veils in certain cultures are almost universally deficient in Vitamin D, as are submariners who spend extended time submerged. Neither group spends much time with their skin exposed to direct sunlight. The most common reasons for Vitamin D deficiency in North America also relate to lack of exposure to sunlight and infrequent consumption of cold-water fish. Cold-water fish such as wild salmon, mackerel and sardines are good food sources of Vitamin D – as well as good sources of calcium and Omega-3 fatty acids.

Many foods have been supplemented with Vitamin D, but this has not resulted in an overall increase in Vitamin D levels. This is likely because food and supplement manufacturers rely on an inexpensive form of synthetic Vitamin D called “ergocalciferol” – a form of Vitamin D-2. Food sources of Vitamin D and supplements such as TriVita’s Bone Growth Factor, VitaCal-Mag D and Leanology Capsules use Vitamin D-3 (cholecalciferol), which is the same form that your body makes from sunshine.

What to do?

If your bones are tender or if you have a low blood level of Vitamin D the solution may be as simple as increasing your sun exposure. Spend 20 minutes daily in the sunshine with 40% of your skin surface exposed. Morning and evening sunshine is best; afternoon sun is acceptable. Never allow yourself to sunburn.

When supplementing with Vitamin D always choose D-3. It is also good to remember that this is a “fat soluble” vitamin. That means that you can store the nutrient for many days.

I will often suggest two capsules of TriVita’s Bone Growth Factor or two tablets of VitaCal-Mag D to be taken at every meal. Test the tenderness in your sternum and shin bones every 6 months. Reduce your supplements to one capsule or tablet per meal when the tenderness has disappeared from the sternum and shin bones.

If Leanology Capsules are a more appropriate source of Vitamin D for you (if you are overweight and otherwise in a low-risk category for osteoporosis), taking two capsules at each meal is a good strategy. However, since most overeating occurs in the evening and since Vitamin D reduces appetite, it may be best to take three to six Leanology capsules all in the evening.

It is good to get a blood test for appropriate blood levels of Vitamin D twice a year and a DEXA scan of your bones at least every two years to help you structure a supplement program.

Eventually, health comes down to healthy habits practiced every day. Every day we should nourish our body and nurture our spirit for sustained health. **END of ARTICLE**

Now I’m not a doctor or even in the health care industry, but I do a lot of research and read a lot of articles. Before committing to any supplementation, always check with your health care professional first. If he/she recommends taking a vitamin D supplement, show him/her Vitamin D, and ask their opinion.

Chronic Hunger and Weight LossChronic Hunger and Weight Loss

Millions of people worldwide look to diet and/or lose weight every year. However, on the flip side there are millions of men, women, and children suffering from a lack of food, or starvation. How is it that people can spend thousands of dollars on weight loss programs, to lose the unwanted pounds, all the while these people are literally starving to death?

My friends at the Help End Hunger Now Foundation, in their weekly hunger report, explains chronic hunger and the affects it has on the masses that are suffering from it throughout the world. The Help End Hunger Foundation is an organization founded on the principles of ending this chronic hunger crisis, while at the same time, promoting healthier and more nutritious eating habits.

Below is the complete article explaining what many people are facing and serious facts about chronic hunger. If you’re looking to lose weight or looking for a weight loss program, because of your bad eating habits, I pray that you will take to heart the information in the article, and take action to not only help yourself, but to help the many people that need help now.

Chronic Hunger by The Help End Hunger Now Foundation

What Causes Chronic Hunger?

You may be surprised to learn that it has little to do with food shortages. Global supplies of food far outstrip demand. Chronic hunger affects more than 800 million people in the world and it is, in and of itself, a potentially deadly condition.

The Effects of Chronic Hunger

Chronic hunger — or food insecurity — is as devastating to families, communities, and countries as is famine. Chronic hunger claims more victims than famine each year — by far.

Effects of chronic hunger include:

High Infant-Mortality Rates. Malnourished women are more likely to be sick, have smaller babies, and die earlier, resulting in high levels of infant mortality in areas where chronic hunger is a problem. And where infant and child mortality is high, birth rates are also high, locking these communities in a vicious cycle of malnutrition and death. Vulnerability to Common Illnesses. More than two million children die every year from dehydration caused by diarrhea. A malnourished child often lacks the strength to survive a severe case of diarrhea.

Increased Risk of Infection.

A malnourished child has a weakened immune system, making the child more vulnerable to infection. Infections cause lack of appetite and further compromise the child’s ability to fight off recurrent and lingering infections. Impediments to Development. Chronic hunger deprives children of the essential proteins, micronutrients and fatty acids they need to grow adequately. Globally, it is estimated that nearly 226 million children are stunted — shorter than they should be. In addition, stunted children score significantly lower on intelligence tests than do normal children.

Impediments to Economic Growth.

For the nearly 67 million children who weigh less than they should due to chronic hunger, completing school is an unlikely reality. Studies have shown that underweight children will probably spend fewer years in school, which, in turn, has a measurable impact on how much they earn in adulthood. ***END of ARTICLE***

Some reports state that there are approximately 50 million Americans who go on a diets each year – yet only 5 percent keep the weight off that they lost. Many people trying to lose weight continually struggle to find an effective weight loss method, yet millions of people are starving to death. Why? Awareness!

I would have to believe that most people do not know what’s happening around the world, let alone in their own neighborhood. And I believe it all starts with awareness. Being aware of the problems facing, not only, our neighborhood and/or nation, but other countries around the world is the first step towards ending the world hunger problem, not to mention obesity.

If you’re looking to lose weight, or looking for a weight loss program click here. Chronic hunger and weight loss go hand in hand when you have organizations like the Help End Hunger Foundation and TriVita® working to stop the world hunger issues, while helping people lose weight. If you’d like to help end hunger around the world, and lose weight at the same time, contact TriVita® or the Help End Hunger Now Foundation.

I hope this article has increased awareness within your heart as to the challenges of the world. If it has, I now challenge you to take action, and do something about it. Remember, awareness has to precede action; once we are aware of the problem, we can then take action. I hope you accept this challenge, so we can End Hunger Now!

Vitamin B12Vitamin B12

A lot of doctors recommend vitamin b12 shots over other oral tablets. However, TriVita’s patented sublingual vitamin B12 may provide the proper supply of this all important vitamin.

Why is vitamin b12 necessary? According to a web site that’s promoting b12 shots, “vitamin B12 shots are designed to provide the user with a boost in energy and a prolonged source of energy to use during the day. There are some advantages to getting Vitamin B12 supplements in the form of B12 injections. Because the vitamin is absorbed more quickly into the bloodstream this way, B12 injections can provide a quick energy boost. Many people who get vitamin B12 injections notice an improvement in their energy level within a few days, if not sooner. In addition to feeling more energy, the shots can be effective in terms of clearer skin, better sleep, improved memory, and feeling less stressed. The fact is that Vitamin B12 is a micro nutrient that is used in the process of energy release. Without the presence of Vitamin B12 you could not burn calories and your energy would not be released.” [1]

As you can see from the quote above, vitamin b12 is not just a quick energy booster, it produces a lot of other effective results. Before we get into the positive results, let’s take a look at what your body may have to deal with if you are vitamin b12 deficient.

The most severe case of vitamin b12 deficiency (your body does not have enough of this vitamin) is anemia, which means you do not have enough red blood cells to do the job which can leave you feeling week and tired. Typically, vitamin B12 deficiency anemia is not diagnosed until it is moderate to severe.

Some symptoms of vitamin b12 deficiency include:

  • Feeling week, tired or lightheaded
  • Memory loss and or disorientation
  • Having pale skin, or white spots on the skin, resulting from melatonin becoming absent in the area
  • Have a sore, red or itchy tongue. Some may experience sores at the corners of the mouth. These are raw spots, not blisters, and they tend to come and go
  • Numbness or tingling in your fingers and or toes
  • Sharp stabbing pain in the palm of one or both hands
  • Eye twitch, usually in one eye or the other. It can occur on the eyelid or just below
  • Depression [1]

A simple blood test can determine if you are vitamin b12 deficient. And once the diagnosis has been completed, there are two ways to treat the deficiency: 1.) get b12 shots; 2.) take TriVita’s sublingual B12. If you’re into doctors and needles, shots may be right for you. If you’d prefer an easier method, try TriVita’s sublingual B12 tablets. These tablets dissolve under your tongue, and have patented delivery system.

Dr. Alfred Libby, M.D., a renowned authority on therapeutic nutrition and longtime associate of Nobel Prize Laureate, Dr. Linus Pauling, began to explore an alternative delivery system for Vitamin B-12. The goal was to bypass the stomach where this essential nutrient is not easily absorbed.

In early spring of 1980, Dr. Libby approached his colleagues with his new theory that B-12 could be delivered to the bloodstream sublingually (under the tongue). Biochemists and his medical colleagues were quick to dismiss the idea. However, he was persistent and they eventually decided to give his theory a try, although they were convinced it would fail.

Six weeks later the first clinical trial was underway. Shortly after, Dr. Libby’s sublingual B-12 invention was deemed a complete success – blood levels of B-12 increased from 1.2% to over 90%! In fact, Dr. Libby’s patented sublingual delivery method is able to deliver up to 98% absorption where oral tablets have as little as 2%.

Dr. Libby continued his research for the rest of his life. Over 20 years of research went into vitamin b12 and its effects on the human body. It’s no wonder that with TriVita’s sublingual B12, you can be assured that your body is getting the B vitamins it needs. The original, patented formula bypasses the digestive system, speeding the nutrients directly to your bloodstream, where they can go to work right away.

If you fear needles and shots, why not try TriVita’s sublingual B12. To learn more about Vitamin B-12, click on the previous link.

Vitamin D – Protector from Cancer?Vitamin D – Protector from Cancer?

Probably one of the most unknown facts regarding vitamin D is that it’s one of the most powerful nutrients in nature. Not only does this inflammation fighter help promote healthy heart and brain function, but new studies show the vitamin can help slow down the progression of certain cancers. As a matter of fact, according to numerous studies and medical journals vitamin d, the sunshine vitamin, may be the key to optimum health. It’s no surprise that some scientists call Vitamin D the ultimate protector from disease.

However, nine out of 10 Americans are deficient in vitamin D. Furthermore, it’s been documented many times that even people who spend plenty of time in the sun can still lack this vital inflammation fighter. This is becoming more and more serious because inflammation is a major cause of heart and brain attacks, high blood pressure, joint pain, bone loss, digestive problems, blood sugar imbalances and a host of other serious health problems.

Results of a recent study, presented at the American Society of Hematology’s annual meeting in New Orleans, states that “a high proportion of community-dwelling subjects in both tropical and temperate climates are deficient in vitamin D, and that subjects in northern latitudes often require dietary supplementation to maintain vitamin D sufficiency.” [1]

They also go on and say that “several reports now suggest that vitamin D sufficiency is protective against the development of several cancers, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). However, it is not known whether vitamin D impacts prognosis in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), the most common NHL subtype.” [1]

You can read the background, methods, and results of the entire study by copying and pasting the website address which is listed under the resources heading. But part of the conclusion states that “approximately 50% of all DLBCL patients in this northern US latitude population are vitamin D deficient at the time of diagnosis and treatment. Vitamin D deficient patients have an inferior event-free and overall survival compared to patients with vitamin D levels within the normal range.”

The conclusion of their study should solidify the thought that vitamin D is important. Furthermore, there’s some good news if you feel you’re vitamin D deficient: It’s possible to restore healthy levels of vitamin D by starting a daily routine of taking a vitamin D supplement to avoid dangerous health problems. Finding the highest quality, and most absorbable vitamin D for optimum bone, heart and brain health, is highly recommended.

NOTE: Always check with your health professional, or doctor, before taking any supplement.

Jump-Start Your Weight LossJump-Start Your Weight Loss

For many years now, the number one New Year’s resolution has been weight loss, and it seems like it hasn’t changed this year (2010).

I was watching some television over the holidays and many shows had surveys regarding your number one New Year’s resolution. And overwhelmingly, the number one answer was losing weight. Does that surprise you? Well, if you’re like me, it should not be a big surprise, since obesity is running rampant over our culture.

It don’t have to look very far to see how fat we, as a society have become, and I’m not immune to this phenomenon. Yes, that’s right I could stand to lose a few pounds also, especially after all the holiday parties. So, how do we get started to shed those unwanted pounds? Well, Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer of TriVita, has written an article for the TriVita Weekly Wellness Report giving us some simple and effective ways to to lose weight. I posted the article in its entirety.

How to Jump-Start Your Weight Loss by Brazos Minshew

Weight loss is the number one “resolution” people make when they decide to improve their health. When weight loss occurs it comes from a loss of body mass: water, fat, lean body tissue and bones. Wouldn’t it be great to focus weight loss on fat only? It certainly would. In fact, weight loss that selectively targets fat and preserves or increases lean body tissues and bones is the only way to permanently lose weight.

Sounds difficult, right? Well, don’t worry: We have a solution!

Suicidal weight loss

Many people lose weight rapidly by starving themselves. I call this suicidal weight loss for three reasons:

  1. Rapid weight loss is water loss; water loss is dehydration and dehydration is death.
  2. Rapid weight loss comes from lean body tissue (brain, heart, muscle, collagen, etc.). Sarcopenia (age-related loss of lean body tissue) is death.
  3. Rapid weight loss comes from bone. Bone loss is osteoporosis; osteoporosis kills more women in North America than breast cancer!

Rapid weight loss by starving yourself is slow suicide.

Lifetime weight control

An alternative to this kind of weight loss madness is to select a strategy that focuses on weight loss from fat only. This is not done by accident. We must select fat loss by choice. This choice implies knowledge; knowledge means that we must learn the lesson of obesity and battle it for the rest of our lives.

Calories – Obesity in simplistic terms is about consuming more calories than you burn in a single day. Multiply these extra calories over time and you have what we all see: an obesity epidemic. However, it is not merely the number of calories we eat; we must include the right kind of calories for lifetime weight control. Organizations such as the American Heart Association and the America Cancer Society recommend eating 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily (5 for children, 7 for women and 9 for men). These are the best calories.

Movement – Our body is made to move. Daily exercise is necessary for lifetime weight control and targeted fat loss. Aerobic training for 30 minutes on most days of the week and weight training (resistance training) 2 to 5 times per week will keep the fires of your metabolism burning fat.

Other tips:

  • Deep breathing for 20 minutes daily reduces fat-building hormones like cortisol.
  • Get your sleep: The less you sleep, the more you will weigh.
  • Eat small meals: Eating more than 400 calories at a single meal causes our cells to suffocate from insulin.

Why supplementation is important

Taking certain supplements can help you lose weight, but you really have to be careful! One supplement that was heavily advertised on television was shown to cause 74% weight loss from lean body tissue. Another supplement that seemed to be the most popular weight loss supplement of the time caused 55% lean body loss. That is suicidal weight loss!

Beneficial supplements exist. For example, Leanology Weight Loss Capsules were studied in a top-of-the-line, scientific clinical trial through Arizona State University. They were shown to reduce weight entirely from fat! Yes, 100% of the weight loss came from fat!

Also, the plant antioxidant ECGC (found in Energy Now!) can increase metabolism by over 200 calories per gram.

My favorite fat loss supplement to “jump-start” a weight loss program is Vital C. This is primarily because of the nature of fat: a toxic dumping ground for chemicals and poisons your body could not eliminate. Vital C is a pH-balanced form of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). Ascorbic acid neutralizes many of the toxins we store in our fat cells. For rapid weight loss that targets fat cells, use a Vitamin C Flush, Energy Now! and, especially, Leanology.

Conclusion

Good health only comes from healthy living. Take time to learn the rules of healthy living. Practice healthy habits every day. Soon, the “deposits” you make into your health account will begin to yield real dividends: a lean body functioning at peak efficiency!

As we approach January 2010 many of our new year’s resolutions will begin to take shape. A large group of individuals will probably start to think about getting in shape and losing weight. As this is the case almost every year, I would imagine that it’s no different this year.

With that said I feel it’s a good time to share TriVita’s latest Wellness Report with you. So, if exercise and weight loss are on your radar screen for the coming year, this report, written by Brazos Minshew, TriVita’s Chief Science Officer, should help you get started on the right track.

Calories: Time to Burn!
by Brazos Minshew

Losing weight is a challenge. It requires the same careful consideration that you would give to any serious endeavor; don’t fail to plan. But, create a plan that is realistic. Allow for interruptions such as sickness or travel. Plan to start during a quiet time in your life, not when work and family responsibilities are likely to be at their peak.

You may prefer to start with an exercise program and then add in dietary changes. Or you may want to do it the other way around. If you’re really motivated, you may want to start both the exercise and diet segments simultaneously.

Your diet

Very few aspects of your life are as emotionally charged as securing your right to choose for yourself. From early childhood until today, one of the most frequent choices you make concerns your diet. You must have choices and they must be your own. Recognize that restricting yourself from available choices goes against your very nature. A restrictive diet is doomed to failure. Select a diet that is uncomplicated and appealing to you and you will have a greater chance for success.

The first challenge we face in diet selection is committing to the discipline of thinking ahead instead of eating impulsively. So, start with something small and attainable:

  • Many health experts recommend fresh fruits and vegetables daily
    • 5 servings for children
    • 7 servings for women
    • 9 servings for men
  • Add high quality protein to your diet
  • Drink plenty of water

These are easy steps that you can accomplish today! Remember, the time you spend selecting the right diet for yourself is an investment in your health and your future. Give it the attention it deserves.

Calories in – calories OUT!

We must burn more calories than we consume in order for weight loss to occur.

Exercise is the key to permanent, lifetime weight control. There is no way around it. However, exercise does not have to be a punishment; it can really be pleasurable. The key is finding something you enjoy doing. I suggest that you start with three forms of activity; this prevents exercise boredom. Add more activities every month. Get in the habit of participating in at least 30 minutes of activity every day.

There are basically two types of exercise that you need every week:

  1. Aerobic exercise is defined as any activity that increases your need for oxygen. Aerobics make you breathe harder. You need at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise most days of the week.Aerobic exercise can balance hormones, relieve anxiety and depression, and mobilize your energy for the great works of your life. Aerobic exercise speeds up your metabolism.

But where does metabolism originate? It comes from your lean body mass your muscles! That is the domain of resistance training.

  2. Progressive resistance training is defined as any exercise where the load to the muscle is increased by some mechanical means – weights, bands, springs, and many other methods. The key is to progressively increase the weight or resistance over time. This results in more lean body mass and less fat mass. If you increase your muscle strength, you increase the “engines” that produce muscle energy. Nothing builds metabolism (muscle energy) as well as progressive resistance training.

Supplements for weight loss

A smart weight loss system can also be an important part of your weight loss plan. For many people it represents the critical difference between success and failure in lifetime weight control.

  • Fat burning capsules Weight Loss Capsules help increase metabolism and energy to support your body’s ability to burn more calories. Plus, they help limit cortisol production – the stress-induced hormone that can lead to abdominal fat.
  • Snack replacement chews Appetite Control Chews contain ingredients that are clinically proven to help curb the appetite.
  • Nutritional shakes Nutritional Shakes can be used as a low calorie meal substitute; they provide a healthy balance of wholesome carbohydrates, proteins, good fats, fiber, vitamins and minerals.

However, you must always remember that these are supplements; they supplement a healthy diet and exercise program. Use them wisely as an important part of your total wellness program.

Vitamin B12Vitamin B12

Your body needs B vitamins for protection against illnesses and conditions that are associated with B vitamin deficiency. And according to studies, B vitamin deficiency is common – more common than you might think!

According to the WebMD web site (www.webmd.com), “Having vitamin B12 deficiency means that your body does not have enough of this vitamin. You need B12 to make red blood cells, which carry oxygen through your body. Not having enough B12 can lead to anemia, which means your body does not have enough red blood cells to do the job. This can make you feel weak and tired.”

What are your options for obtaining this all important vitamin? The most popular method is B12 shots. If you’re B12 deficient, you may “get a shot every day for 1 week, then once a week for a month, and then once every month. You can also learn to give yourself shots and/or have a family member learn how to do it.”

Another method to receive vitamin b12 is by taking pills. However, the majority of individual’s bodies, DO NOT absorb the b12 vitamin thought the stomach, so other alternatives, like TriVita’s sublingual B12, can be the answer.

“Sublingual” means “under the tongue.” By simply placing a TriVita® sublingual B-12, B-6 & Folic Acid tablet under your tongue and allowing it to dissolve completely, your body will absorb these essential B vitamins directly into your bloodstream. TriVita’s original patented Sublingual B-12, B-6 & Folic Acid was specially formulated to produce results quickly.

Regular oral B-12 tablets have to take a long trip through your complex digestive system before being absorbed by your body. And, your ability to absorb B vitamins from food and regular oral pills decreases as you age.

With the TriVita® original patented formula, you don’t have to worry about your B-12 going through a digestive system obstacle course – or the pain and expense of a B-12 injection. These essential nutrients go directly into your bloodstream, where they start working right away!

So, if your suffering from B12 deficiency and don’t what to go through the pain and expense of B12 shots, check out TriVita’s sublingual Vitamin B12 by clicking on the previous link.

Vitamin B12Vitamin B12

“Dr. Alfred Libby was a medical doctor and substance abuse therapy specialist who worked primarily with heroin addicts – searching for new therapies to improve the detoxification process. He was aware that most addicts were not getting the B-12 they needed through food, but he was extremely reluctant to give them any kind of injection. In the late 1970s, Dr. Libby began to explore an alternative delivery system for vitamin B-12. The goal was to bypass the stomach where this essential nutrient is not easily absorbed.”

“In early spring of 1980, Dr. Libby approached his colleagues with his theory that B-12 could be delivered to the bloodstream sublingually (under the tongue). Biochemists and his medical colleagues were quick to dismiss the idea. However, he was persistent and they eventually decided to give his theory a try, although they were convinced it would fail.”

“Six weeks later the first study was underway. Shortly after, Dr. Libby’s sublingual delivery method was deemed a complete success – blood levels of B-12 increased dramatically. Dr. Libby significantly improved his formula with the addition of B-6 & Folic Acid and was issued a patent in 1984 for his sublingual process.”

“And now, from the experts that brought you the original sublingual B-12 comes TriVita’s sublingual B-12, in a super dose. With the original, patented delivery system, super B provides more B-12 than the average B-12 shot. Studies show that these important nutrients can be measured in the bloodstream in as little as 30 minutes! Plus, it’s the first and only B-12 product to combine both major forms of B-12 with B-6, folic acid and ginseng.”

“Thanks to Dr. Libby’s original, patented delivery system, thousands of people have experienced increased stamina, mental clarity, improved memory and much more”!

The information listed above is from the TriVita® web site (www.trivita.com/superb/getsuperb.com/dr_libby.aspx), and the reason I bring this up is because of my wife’s son, who has been told that he may have to continue receiving Vitamin B-12 shots the rest of his life. He’s only 25! YIKES!

Here’s his short story. Eighteen months ago he was in the hospital with what was diagnosed as a bleeding ulcer. The doctors found and repaired the problem, no worries. Fast forward to the present (one month ago) – seventeen months later – his condition returned. This time it was much worse, as he was hospitalized for five days, and was given six units of blood. As the doctors continued to monitor his one month progress, they find out that his blood levels are too low (whatever that means).

That leads us to where I started his story. The doctors feel that he “may need vitamin b12 shot the rest of his life.” So with that said, I suggested TriVita’s patented Sublingual B12. Is it recommended by the doctors? Will it be as effective as a true vitamin b12 shot? I guess only time will tell. If “TriVita’s b12 provides more B-12 than the average B-12 shot” he should be fine, and should be getting enough b12 into his system to discontinue the painful shots.

High CholesterolHigh Cholesterol

Just about every one of us has heard about the healthful benefits of adding fish oil to your diet. Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which has been linked to positive effects in the human body. These benefits include lower blood pressure, lower triglycerides and overall cholesterol levels, and even the possibility of reducing the effects of certain types of cancers. The cancers in question include colon, breast, and prostate cancer.

Omega 3 fatty acids have been included in a multitude of medical studies as being very helpful in lowering the risk of heart disease. However, it only includes those individuals that have taken significant amounts of omega-3 over a long period of time. So, what quantity of omega-3 fatty acids are needed to provide an individual with exceptional results?

Perhaps there is no exact answer, however, we need to take a look at some variables before deciding on how much you need to ingest into your diet for them to become effective.

First of all, there’s the age factor. According to experts, “younger people need a higher dose of fish oil than older people.” Why? More than likely, it’s due to the fact that younger people have higher metabolisms and are more active. The fact that they are more active, leads to their bodies burning higher amounts of calories and fats. On the other hand, older people are typically less active, in turn, they don’t need quite as much fish oil to achieve the same benefits.

The second factor that plays a role in deciding on how much omega-3 fatty acids you need is the source, or quality, in which you are taking. Fish oil from its true source, like mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon, may not be as effective as, say, a supplement. And if your source of the natural fish is not reliable, it may even cause more harm than good, especially if it’s contaminated with mercury. The source and quality of omega-3 fatty acids is very important.

Fish oil is readily available in capsule and liquid form, but then again, not all are created equal. It’s been scientifically proven that the quality and concentration of fish oil over the counter can vary greatly. When choosing a quality fish oil supplement, one should make sure that it’s at least health food store grade, and preferably pharmaceutical grade. The higher the quality, the less you should have to ingest to experience the real health benefits.

Your medical condition is the final factor to consider when deciding what dosage of fish oil you need. For example, if you have high cholesterol, are a high risk of heart disease or have high blood pressure, your doctor may prescribe a higher than normal dose for you. Remember, it’s up to your doctor to decide. As with any supplement, you should consult your physician, or medical professional first. It’s not advised to self prescribe more than is recommended on the label of any over-the-counter supplement.

So, what’s the general rule of thumb? The American Heart Association recommends consuming 1–3 grams per day of EPA and DHA. For certain medical conditions, however, higher doses of omega-3 products, up to 4 grams per day, can be used safely, and with good effect. Included the right amount of omega 3 fatty acids can be one of the smartest and most healthy things you ever do for yourself and your body.

TriVita’s Omega-3 supplement helps meet the American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for omega-3 fatty acids. One daily dose of this supplement provides the amount of Omega-3 recommended by the AHA for healthy individuals, as well as for those who have heart disease or the risk of it.

Vitamin D and Heart HealthVitamin D and Heart Health

I’ve been writing about vitamin d and how important it is to get the proper amount of this vitamin to maintain a healthy skeletal system. Well a new study conducted by the Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City suggests that “Vitamin D contributes to a strong and healthy heart as well – and that inadequate levels of the vitamin may significantly increase a person’s risk of stroke, heart disease, and death, even among people who’ve never had heart disease.”

This study has been going on for more than a year, and was conducted on “27,686 patients who were 50 years of age or older with no prior history of cardiovascular disease.” The participants within this study all had routine blood tests to check for vitamin d. There were three different groups created – “normal (over 30 nanograms per milliliter), low (15-30 ng/ml), or very low (less than 15 ng/ml)” – where participants were placed according to their individual results.

“Researchers found that patients with very low levels of Vitamin D were 77 percent more likely to die, 45 percent more likely to develop coronary artery disease, and 78 percent were more likely to have a stroke than patients with normal levels. Patients with very low levels of Vitamin D were also twice as likely to develop heart failure than those with normal Vitamin D levels.”

Previously, medical experts said that vitamin D supplementation should be taken, and/or increased to help promote bone health and ward off diseases like osteoporosis. However, since the new study that was presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Conference on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 in Orlando, Florida, you may see a shift in the way medical professionals will look at vitamin d.

I’m not suggesting that you run out and purchase an exorbitant amount of vitamin d, but what I am suggesting, is that you take another look at vitamin d and heart health, by asking your doctor if it really is as important as this new study suggests. I’m not a medical professional, nor do I suggest that I am, however, when I read article regarding health and wellness, I do a little more investigating.

Our health is nothing to take for granted. As we all know, the healthcare industry has enough struggles of its own. If we can do our own research, listen to our primary care professional, and take every preventable measure to ensure that we get the proper vitamins and nutrients each and every day, we will be doing our part to improving not only the healthcare industry, but also our health.

Vitamin D has always been known as the sunshine vitamin, but many of us do not get enough sunshine to get the recommended requirements of this all important vitamin. So, as winter approaches in the northern hemisphere, may I suggest introducing vitamin d into your diet.

Most vitamin D supplements provide, five forms of chelated calcium, over 20 bone-fortifying vitamins and minerals, 100% RDI of Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Vitamin D, and Chlorophyll-coated tablets that protect valuable nutrients, time-releasing optimal absorption. Vitamin D supplements are also absorbable so you can get the nutrition you need for healthier bones.

According to TriVita®, “the key to bone health is calcium and Vitamin D. These are the two essential ingredients that will help you maintain the strength of your skeletal system, ensure regular cellular activity, proper cardiac function, and preserve the health of other vital body systems.”

TriVita® has known for some time about vitamin d and its affect on the heart, as you can see by the quote above. The study listed further above backs up what TriVita® has been advocating for some time.

New Vitamin SupplementNew Vitamin Supplement

There’s a new multi-nutrient complex daily vitamin supplement that’s more powerful than you average nutritional supplement. Read the following article to learn more about this new vitamin supplement.

According to TriVita’s Chief Science Officer, “We need a multiple nutrient supplement every day to serve as a foundation for health and to combat the nutrient demands of a stressful life.” And that’s exactly why TriVita has created this new and more powerful nutritional supplement.

Below is information on Wellavoh™, the new super-nutritional supplement. The information is provided by TriVita’s weekly health and wellness report.

How Nutrients Help Relieve Stress
Stress is defined as change that is seen by your body or mind as a threat – large or small, imaginary or real – or a change in your environment that triggers a rapid use of your reserves. Stress creates a demand on your resources. Soon, these resources become exhausted and you get sick.

Distress can come from your environment, your body or your mind. Rather than being just a single event, stress accumulates over time from all three sources. It strangles the joy and pleasure from your days and nights. It makes you miserable, and then it makes you sick. Once you are sick, stress keeps you from responding as well to medical care. Yes, stress is a killer!

Nutrients to the rescue
The opposite of stress is homeostasis. So, while stress is constantly trying to pull you apart, homeostasis is constantly working to put you back together. Homeostasis is the priority process your body uses to combat stress.

Vitamins, minerals and other nutrients are essential for homeostasis. If we have the nutrients we need at the moment we need them, we will thrive! Conversely, if we do not have the proper nutrient base in our system every day we will suffer loss of energy, poor mental performance and an increased risk for disease.

Supplements
The word supplement means an addition to something to make up for a deficiency. All supplements are an important addition to a healthy diet. They make up for the deficiency we face because of poor nutrient density in our foods. They also help out when we miss the mark of diet perfection.

Supplements are no substitute for good dietary choices. We simply must commit ourselves to eating a healthy diet. As you review your food choices for the past week, ask yourself, “Did I eat the right amount of fruits and vegetables every day?”

  • 5 servings for children
  • 7 servings for women
  • 9 servings for men

If you can say “yes” – congratulations! If you are like most people you did not reach that goal. And, if you are like most of us, you did not eat all of your fruits and vegetables from an organic source; so, the fruits and vegetables may have been of low nutrient value.

We need a multiple nutrient supplement every day to serve as a foundation for health and to combat the nutrient demands of a stressful life.

A new supplement
Staying on top of our nutrient reserve is important. Our body makes millions of new cells every day – heart cells, brain cells, bone and blood cells. Stress kills millions of vulnerable cells every day. Every time a cell dies it should be replaced. If you do not have the right amount of nutrients to construct a new cell, you will either make an incomplete cell or none at all. The outcome is bad in either case; so, we really need to keep all nutrients on board at all times. This is why we created Sonoran Bloom™ Wellavoh™ (wel-lah voh), a new multi-nutrient complex for men and women.

The destructive forces of stress come from inside and outside your body. The nutrient complexes of Wellavoh can help you build a bulwark against stress as it tries to pull you apart. Wellavoh supports homeostasis as the innate wisdom of your body tries to keep you functioning at your peak.

One more reason…
Perhaps an even more important reason exists for maintaining a robust supply of nutrients in our system daily. According to a recent report, chemical switches on our DNA are activated by nutrients. If a single nutrient is missing at the critical moment it is needed, one of these chemical switches will fail. This results in a change in our DNA that promotes disease – for up to three generations of our children! So, it is vital that we and our children have our nutrients available every day to reduce the impact of stress while promoting vitality today, health tomorrow and a solid wellness foundation for generations to come!

Vitamin DVitamin D

Vitamin D is a powerful inhibitor of cancer development and growth – and vitamin D is produced almost entirely by exposure to the sun. It’s been noted that just 30 minutes of direct sunlight produces up to 50,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D.

In the 1970s and ’80s, the medical establishment, led by dermatologists, sounded an alarm over the rising number of malignant melanomas in the United States. Since doctors believed that most skin cancers were the result of too much exposure to UVB rays from the sun, they launched a campaign to persuade people to use sun blockers and stay out of the sun.

This campaign caused more problems than it corrected. Skin cancer is also caused by UVA rays, which most sun blocks don’t block, and since the sun was considered the main source of vitamin D, many people became vitamin D deficient. Thus, by making people vitamin D deficient, they inadvertently increased people’s risk of developing all forms of skin cancer, including the deadly malignant melanoma.

That’s only part of the problem when it comes to vitamin D deficiency. Recent research has revealed that vitamin D deficiency also contributes to serious neurological and brain disorders, including autism, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s.

Dr. Russell Blaylock, a M.D., a board-certified neurosurgeon, and a practicing physician for more than 30 years, has created an important report that explains the importance of vitamin D, and what most of the medical experts are not telling you. I’ve read some of Dr. Blaylock’s report, and the information he provides will change the way you view your doctor’s agenda.

Vitamin D is a very complex substance. For more than half a century vitamin D was thought only to mineralize bones. But recent studies, according to Dr. Blaylock’s report, indicate that it does much more:

  • Regulates calcium in all cells (especially brain cells)
  • Protects the immune system
  • Regulates cell growth and cell death
  • Provides antioxidant and antiviral benefits

Dr. Blaylock also says, “we now know that vitamin D deficiency is very common in the elderly. This makes sense because so many are house-bound and avoid sun exposure.”

Since many of us do not get enough sunlight exposure, we need to take a daily vitamin D supplement. This vitamin is too important to the health of your body to ignore.

TriVita’s® Vitamin D, is my choice for vitamin D. It provides, five forms of chelated calcium, over 20 bone-fortifying vitamins and minerals, 100% RDI of Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Vitamin D, and Chlorophyll-coated tablets that protect valuable nutrients, time-releasing optimal absorption. TriVita’s Vitamin D is also absorbable so you can get the nutrition you need for healthier bones.

Vitamin B12Vitamin B12

According to many sources, doctor prescribed medications can have adverse affects on the human body. For example, some of the medications that deplete vitamin b12 over time include, “Anti-inflammatory medications – inhalant, systemic, and topical corticosteroids; Antibiotic medications – aminoglycosides; Antibiotic medications – sulfa drugs; Antibiotic medications – macrolides; Antibiotic medications – penicillin derivatives,” [1] and a whole host of others, too large to mention in this article.

The medications listed above are not only depleting the all important vitamin b12, but other vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamins B9 and B6, and important minerals such as calcium, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), magnesium, melatonin, potassium, protein and amino acid, selenium, and zinc, to mention a few. Additional information is available on the University of Maryland Medical Center web site (www.umm.edu).

Here is a quote from the UMM web site about vitamin B12 deficiency:

“Obvious symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency are rare because it takes years to develop complications associated with long-term depletion of this nutrient. Irritability, weakness, numbness, anemia, loss of appetite, headache, personality changes, and confusion are some of the signs and symptoms associated with vitamin B12 depletion. Low levels of this vitamin may also be associated with an increased risk of colon cancer, heart disease, brain disorders, and birth defects.” [1]

I know it says that obvious symptoms of vitamin B12 are rare, however, if you’re taking a combination of the doctor prescribed medications listed above, there’s a chance that the depletion process could become more aggressive over time. Since many adults are taking, or will be in the future, multiple medications, understanding the side effects should become more of a priority.

According to some medical researchers, by the age of 65, an average person is on about 6 different medications. These same researchers say that each one of “these medications are designed to improve a specific body function. All of these body functions require specific nutrients as fuel.”

So you are not alone when it comes to taking multiple meds. That’s the reason so many health conscious individuals suggest taking precautionary measures, which may include taking a daily supplement of vitamin B12. Taking a vitamin B12 supplement is one of the easiest ways to get your recommended daily dose.

Let me make it perfectly clear, I’m not a doctor or healthcare professional. So before taking any dietary supplement, you should talk to a health care professional or doctor. The information in this article is just to inform people of the health risks related to doctor prescribed medications, and vitamin B12 deficiency. Although my information comes from reliable sources, it’s up to the you to verify it.

If you’re taking multiple medications, find out what effect these man-made drugs are having on your body. There may be alternatives to these prescribed drugs. Doctors may be treating your symptoms, but do they really care about the long term side effects?

In my opinion, taking a b12 supplement on a daily basis is a must. To learn more about the sublingual vitamin b12, contact me.

Results of Omega-3 StudyResults of Omega-3 Study

Information from a new research study, which was published in the European Heart Journal, reveals that eating oily fish, such as salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel and trout at least once per week can contribute to a reduction in the risk of heart failure in men.

The study was conducted at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). In the study, they analyzed 39,367 Swedish men between the ages of 45 and 79 from 1998 to 2004. “The researchers recorded details of the men’s diet and tracked the men’s outcome through Swedish inpatient hospital registers and cause-of-death registers. During this period, 597 men in the study (with no previous history of heart disease or diabetes) developed heart failure. Thirty-four men died.” [1]

The study produced solid evidence that the men who ate fatty fish once a week had a 12 percent lower risk of developing heart failure.

“Analysis of their numbers showed that the men who ate fatty fish (herring, mackerel, salmon, whitefish and char) once a week were 12 percent less likely to develop heart failure, compared with men who ate no fatty fish. Although this association did not reach statistical significance, notes Levitan, the researchers also found a statistically significant association with the intake of marine omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in cod liver and other fish oils: The men who consumed approximately 0.36 grams a day were 33 percent less likely to develop heart failure than the men who consumed little or no marine omega-3 fatty acids.” [1]

“Our study reinforces the current recommendations for moderate consumption of fatty fish,&quot notes first author Emily Levitan, PhD, a research fellow in the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Research Center at BIDMC. “Current guidelines from the American Heart Association recommend eating fatty fish twice a week.”

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to human health but cannot be manufactured by the body. For this reason, omega-3 fatty acids must be obtained from food, and or supplements. However, there has been some concerns regarding mercury contamination of omega-3 fatty acids supplements. If mercury is a concern, I suggest taking certified mercury-free omega-3 supplements.

Omega-3 supplements meet the American Heart Association guidelines. One daily dose of a good omega-3 supplement provides the amount of essential fatty acids recommended by the AHA for healthy individuals, as well as for those who have heart disease or the risk of it.

Further research suggests that essential fatty acids (EFAs) support our wellness in so many ways, starting with helping to reduce runaway inflammation. Many of us don’t realize this, but runaway inflammation can lead to various serious health problems in the body, not only with the heart, but also with the arteries, lungs, and joints.

Many of us are not a fish eaters; if that’s you, Omega Prime can be a great addition to your diet. And since omega-3 fatty acids are recommended by doctors and health professionals, it’s important to get your recommended daily requirement.

Weight LossWeight Loss

What does healthy living mean to you? Does it mean giving up your favorite foods? Does it mean eating vegetables for breakfast and fruits for lunch? Does it mean exercising three times a day? Healthy living isn’t about starving yourself or testing your limits. It’s all about achieving balance between the physical, emotional, nutritional, and spiritual elements in your life.

A weight loss system can help to do just that, live a healthier lifestyle. Weight loss, in many cases, may be the first step to living a healthier lifestyle. If that’s the case, finding the right weight loss system may be right for you. If maintaining a healthy weight is more fitting for you, a weight loss system, may be right for you. Before I get into the benefits of any weight loss system, let’s first take a look at weight loss and what it means.

No matter what side of the fence you’re on, weight loss or weight management are the two biggest issues facing most people when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. Getting to a healthy weight and/or maintaining your current weight does not have to be difficult. It does, however, include change, change in your eating habits, exercise routine, emotional outlook, and your spiritual mind set.

A Lifestyle of Change

I’ve read somewhere that if you’re going to call this a “diet,” then you’re going to gain all the weight back in a very short period of time. It’s also been said, and I believe it, “diets do not work.” Diets are only a temporary fix, short term weight loss. However, when you change your dietary lifestyle, you change your habits. This lifestyle change will put you on the right track for long-term continued success and weight maintenance.

If you want to fail, tell someone that you’re on a diet. Most of your family and friends will tell you that diets do not work, and they are correct (just see the preceding paragraph). I know a lot of people that loose a lot of weight in the short term just to return to an even higher weight once the diet is over. It may work out well for a while, but will ultimately fail because their lifestyle didn’t change. And this change, if it’s going to work, has to be permanent.

Weight Loss is a Mind Game

Having the right frame of mind will help you stick to and achieve your goals. You have to have a positive mind set. You have to believe that this is what you want, to live a healthier lifestyle. Nobody can help you with this; it’s an inside game. And that’s where being connected to a source greater than self will drive you through the tough times.

God is the only living being that can help you through the tough times. He is the one that created you and he knows what’s best for you. Give your undivided attention to Him, and He will give you direction, strength, and will power. Everything we have comes from God. So start today and build a relationship with your creator.

Building a relationship with God is no different than building a relationship with those around you. You do it through sharing and listening, and you can do it by offering a daily simple prayer. By doing so, you will enjoy a sense of well-being you will not experience in any other way.

Take at least 15 minutes each day to spend in prayer, meditation, and inspirational reading. Make this a time to concentrate on the areas in your life where you most need Divine help. Seek out Divine comfort and direction every day. Once this is done, you can be assured that you’re on the right path to a healthier lifestyle.

A Weight Loss System

Many weight loss systems have shakes, which can provide a healthier alternative for a quick and convenient meal. Many have well-balanced nutritional profiles and contains elements that are essential to a healthy meal: protein, healthy carbs, healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Besides helping to satisfy your hunger, shakes can provide the added health benefits of soy, omega fatty acids, and whole food concentrates.

Many shakes contain healthy fats and carbohydrates. many of us know that a well-balanced nutritious meal consists of appropriate fats, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, water, enzymes, phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, and many other ingredients that nourish your body. Many shakes are designed as balanced nutrition.

Unlike your typical diet drink powdered formulas, most shakes contain the Omega-3 fats, soluble fiber, and volume of nutrients necessary to satisfy hunger for hours. Nutritional Shakes usually are available in delicious flavors, like chocolate, vanilla, and some form of berry.

Shakes are not a replacement for eating more nutritiously and/or physical activity. However, they are a great way to supplement your new healthy way of life.

Omega-3 Fatty AcidsOmega-3 Fatty Acids

Did you know that your brain is made up of 60% fat? And did you know that the neurons that communicate messages to your brain need high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids to get the job done? If you answered no to one of both of these questions, chances are, you’re not getting enough omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs).

If you’re not getting enough omega-3’s—your brain is one of the first organs to feel the effects. And that means…

  • Sluggish thinking and mental fog
  • “Senior moments” and forgetfulness
  • Poor concentration and memory recall
  • Inability to learn new things
  • Mood swings and sadness

In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that mood problems will become the second leading cause of disability worldwide by 2020. [1]

And researchers say this increase may be due to the fact that we’re eating fewer amounts of essential omega-3’s. It’s suggested that we should not take a chance with our brain health. We need to make sure we boost our levels of healthy omega-3’s.

“Regular fish consumption (1-2 servings per week) is protective against coronary heart disease and ischaemic stroke and is recommended. The serving should provide an equivalent of 200-500 mg of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acid. People who are vegetarians are recommended to ensure adequate intake of plant sources of a-linolenic acid.” [2]

If you’re not a fish eater, like many people, it’s never been easier to get your regular dose of omega-3 because there is an omega-3 supplement that contains healthy omega-3’s, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which are both found only in cold water fish like salmon and herring.

With a healthy dose of 400 mg of omega-3—you get powerful omega-3 supplementation to help boost your brain and body health.

Other ingredients in this supplement are organic flaxseed oil, which contains “alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid that appears to be beneficial for heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, and other health conditions”[3], and evening primrose oil, which “contains an omega-6 essential fatty acid, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is believed to be the active ingredient.”[4]

This supplement not only protects the brain, but also meets the American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for omega-3 intake. One daily dose provides the amount of Omega-3 recommended by the AHA for healthy individuals, as well as for those who have heart disease or the risk of it.

Now, you can protect your brain and heart at the same time by taking an omega-3 fatty acids supplement daily.

Vitamin B-12Vitamin B-12

Vitamin b-12 and folate are two of the main ingredients in many B-12 supplements. The others are Vitamin B-6 and biotin. Since b-12 and folate are considered very important to the human body, I thought I’d use this article to concentrate on those two ingredients.

What is B-12 and Folate?

According to the Labs Tests Online website, a public resource on clinical lab testing from the laboratory professionals who do the testing, “B12 and folate are B complex vitamins that are necessary for normal red blood cell formation, tissue and cellular repair, and DNA synthesis.” [1]

Vitamin B-12 and Folate Deficiency

It’s more of a deficiency of b-12 and folate that causes problems rather than an over abundance of these vitamins. As a matter of fact, a lot of research and studies have been conducted on these complex vitamins. The main findings have been that a deficiency of b-12 and/or folate “can lead to macrocytic anemia, a condition characterized by the production of fewer, but larger red blood cells and a decreased ability to carry oxygen.” [1]

Information from Lab Tests Online also states that “a deficiency in B12 can also result in varying degrees of neuropathy, nerve damage that can cause tingling and numbness in the patient’s hands and feet and mental changes that range from confusion and irritability to severe dementia.” [1]

There are many symptoms that occur which leads doctors to a vitamin b-12 deficiency. However, &quot:the symptoms associated with B12 and folate deficiency are frequently subtle and nonspecific. They are related to the resulting macrocytic anemia, nerve involvement, and gastrointestinal changes. Patients with an early deficiency may be diagnosed before they experience any overt symptoms.” [1]

Other symptoms may include, “confusion, paranoia, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue/weakness, loss of appetite, malabsorption, paleness, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, sore tongue and mouth, tingling, numbness, and/or burning in the feet, hands, arms, and legs (with B12).” [1]

Causes of Vitamin B-12 Deficiency

One of the main causes that I’ve heard about, especially when it comes to the elderly, is inadequate absorption. Most of the elderly population is unable to absorb vitamin b-12 from the food they eat. And once again, according to the Labs Tests Online website, they confirm what I’ve come to learn over the past year. “B12 and folate deficiency may be due to insufficient intake, inadequate absorption, increased loss, or to increased need.” [1]

Lab Tests Online continues with, “B12 deficiency can be caused by insufficient stomach acid – necessary to separate B12 from ingested protein. This is the most common cause of B12 deficiency in the elderly and individuals on drugs that suppress gastric acid production. Deficiency may also be due to a lack of intrinsic factor, a substance produced by parietal cells in the stomach that binds with B12 before absorption by the intestines. An autoimmune condition called pernicious anemia involves damage to the parietal cells, resulting in decreased production of intrinsic factor.” [1]

Sublingual B-12

I believe it’s the deficiency and malabsorption factors that led to the invention of a patented Sublingual B-12 formula, on a trek to develop an easy to use B-12 and folate concentrated supplement. Before this formula came to the market, the most popular way to get the proper dose of the b-12 vitamin was through a shot, which had to be administered by a doctor, and was guaranteed to be absorbed into the body.

Many people have found success with the patented sublingual vitamin b12. It has become the number one selling product which is sold and distributed by only one company. As mentioned before, the b12 vitamin is very important, and should be taken on a daily basis. It’s almost impossible to get enough of b-12 and folate through a proper diet, especially if you’re starting to get up there in age.

Before taking any dietary supplement, you should talk to a health care professional or doctor. The information in this article is just to inform people of the health risks related to vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies. Although my information comes from reliable sources, it’s up to you to verify this information, just ask your doctor.

I believe that taking a b12 supplement on a daily basis is a must. To learn more about the sublingual vitamin b12, its patented delivery system, contact me.

Omega-3 Essential Fatty AcidsOmega-3 Essential Fatty Acids

I continue to do research on nutritional products provided by many companies. In a effort to solidify the information provided by these companies, along with the claims made on their products, I always feel a need to go that extra mile, and do my own research. With that said, here is what I’ve found experts, backed by case studies, have said about the importance of omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs).

“Dr Emanuel Severus of the Berlin University finds that major depression is characterized by a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids and that these acids possess powerful anti-arrhythmic properties. He suggests that the missing link in the recently established association between major depression and sudden cardiac death may be the omega-3 fatty acid deficiency which characterizes both conditions.” [1]

The American Heart Association (AHA) has been claiming that omega-3 is important to keeping the heart healthy. I’ve also written about that in my past articles. As a matter of fact, the AHA recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon) at least 2 times a week. Your can learn more by going to their web site.

“DHA, a major component of fish oils, is the most important fatty acid in the brain and retina and makes up more than 30% of the structural lipid (fat) in neurons. There is ample evidence that a deficiency of DHA is associated with depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and dementia. Clinical studies have shown that an increased intake of DHA may benefit patients with dyslexia and Alzheimer’s disease.” [2]

“Researchers at Boston University and Tufts University School of Medicine now report that they have found a clear association between low blood levels of DHA and the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease…The researchers suggest that maintaining adequate levels of DHA through the consumption of fish or dietary supplements rich in DHA may be particularly important for the elderly.” [2]

I’ve written articles about Alzheimer’s Disease, and the importance of omega-3 fatty acids as a preventative natural product. In the previous study, it’s a proven fact that “increased intake of DHA may benefit patients with dyslexia and Alzheimer’s disease.” Supplements high in omega-3 fatty acid, are great sources of DHA to help prevent this terrible disease.

“Manic-depressive illness (bipolar disorder) is a common, severe mental illness involving repeated episodes of depression, mania (rapid mood changes, hyperactivity, and excessive cheerfulness) or both. It is usually treated with drugs such as lithium carbonate or valproate. Unfortunately, these drugs are not very effective and recurrence rates are high. It is generally believed that bipolar disorder involves an overactivity in the neuronal signal pathways. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to dampen this overactivity and medical researchers at the Harvard Medical School have confirmed that omega-3 oils may be useful in the treatment of bipolar disorder.” [3]

This is the first information I’ve seen regarding omega-3 being used to treat bipolar disorders. However, it must be working because the Harvard researchers urge that further trials of fish oils in the treatment of depression and manic-depressive illness be completed.

Those are just a few findings on the importance of incorporating omega-3 into your daily diet. I know a lot of people do not like fish, that’s why finding an omega-3 supplement with a premier blend of essential fatty acids from 4 sources — Fish, Flaxseed, Evening Primrose and Perilla Seed, may be right for you.

Vitamin B-12Vitamin B-12

There are many vitamin b-12 supplements on the market, and people always wonder which supplement is right for them. I read in a wellness article how to determine which B12 vitamin is the best for you.

In order to keep the integrity of the author’s answer, I’ve decided to post the majority of the answer below. The title of the article was Need for Vitamin B-12.

Start of Article: Vitamin B-12 is an essential nutrient: You cannot thrive without it. You need Vitamin B-12 to make healthy blood, healthy nerves and a healthy brain. Vitamin B-12 insufficiency is implicated in a number of common conditions: from allergies and ADHD to bipolar disorder and Alzheimer’s disease. Along with iron and Vitamin C, Vitamin B-12 is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies among seniors. You may actually be protected from a shrinking brain with healthy levels of Vitamin B-12.

There are three ways of looking at “need” in Vitamin B-12:

  1. Disease. If your blood levels are low in B-12 you may be diagnosed with a medical condition called pernicious anemia. This is a serious health condition that is often caused by the inability to properly absorb B-12.
  2. Complete B-12 metabolism. Is the B-12 you are taking doing what it is supposed to do? If so, your homocysteine levels will be low. If not, your homocysteine levels will be high – even though your blood levels of B-12 are also high. B-12 along with folate, Vitamin B-6 and biotin are still needed as long as homocysteine levels are too high.
  3. How you feel. Are you mentally sluggish? Do you feel better when you take B-12? If so, you can continue to take B-12 simply to feel better because there is no toxicity associated with taking B-12.

Types of B-12

Vitamin B-12 is made from the mineral cobalt by beneficial bacterial in the soil and inside living organisms. When scientists make Vitamin B-12 for use in supplements, it is done in the same way. The “parent” form of B-12 is cyanocobalamine (cyan- means blue: the color of cobalt). Cyanocobalamine nourishes your entire body, and your liver uses cyanocobalamine to make other forms of Vitamin B-12. One of the major “children” of cyanocobalamine is methylcobalamine. Methyl-B12 is used in detoxification, especially homocysteine detoxification.

There are many other types of B-12. However, as long as you have cyanocobalamine, your body will make the other types as it needs them. The exception to this rule occurs when a person has been poisoned with toxins such as mercury and lead or when a genetic imbalance prevents them from completely converting B-12.

The type of B-12 for you

Most people over 30 need to take a B-12 supplement. The only certain way to get B-12 into your system quickly (besides injecting it) is to absorb it sublingually, under your tongue. Even people under 30 may take B-12 if they feel stressed, suffer from allergies or asthma, are sad, blue or tired. Vitamin B-12 is also helpful in people with ADHD and other nervous disorders – not as a medical treatment, but as a support for healthy blood, nerves and brain.

A sublingual B-12 is awesome in these circumstances. Or you may want to step up to a super sublingual B-12 which is faster-acting and longer-lasting – with three times the Vitamin B-12. If your homocysteine levels are high, or if you have a family history of heart attack, stroke, osteoporosis, or Alzheimer’s disease, HCY Guard may be best for you.

This should help you see the need for Vitamin B-12 as well as give you the tools you need to decide which one(s) you need!

One thing you can do, is take control of your health. It’s something you can decide to do. It’s your decision! End of Article.

According to the article, you should use Sublingual B-12 or Super Sublingual B-12 if:

  • You are over 30
  • You have any type of digestion issue
  • You have low energy
  • You have poor moods
  • You need to improve your memory

And he suggests that you should use HCY Guard if:

  • You have elevated levels of homocysteine
  • You are exposed to environmental toxins
  • You have low kidney function
  • You need detoxification
